Our Top Picks from Miami Swim Week 2020

Designers are finding new ways to showcase their collections.

Held in South Florida each summer, Miami Swim Week is an annual celebration of new swimwear, showcasing up-and-coming designers, established brands and a diverse and inclusive set of women. This year’s gathering was moved from its usual July in-person spectacular to an August mostly online experience. While we’re bummed to have missed one of our favorite events of the year, we are thankful to those designers who shared their shows virtually.

SI Swim Search hopeful Saje Nicole walked the Maaji show in bright bikinis and hand-painted Air Force 1’s. She shared what things looked like behind the scenes this year. “As far as the safety measures, they gave all of us masks to wear backstage that were designed by the company. That allowed us to be safe and funky at the same time,” she says. “You can’t notice it on camera but on each side of the runway there were only about 10 people [editors and industry professionals] -- and they were all spaced out. So it was mostly a virtual show, but we kept up the energy as if there were hundreds of people there. The main point of the show was to make sure that even in the midst of a pandemic, we kept the spirit of Swim Week alive and didn’t let it get cancelled out all together.”

While many brands opted for similar runways with live streams, others, like Acacia, used this as a time to experiment with new forms of digital presentation by creating cinematic content in which to display their collections. This year was quite a different experience but we still left with packed online shopping carts.

We’ve rounded up some of our favorite suits from tried-and-true brands that you’ll want to add to your swimsuit collection!
