Five Black-Owned Design Companies

There's no doubt 2020 was a turning point in bringing racial injustice in the U.S. to light, making this year's Black History Month more important than ever. While there are plenty of ways to honor the important annual observance--like reading books written by black female authors--one impactful option is to support black-owned businesses. And towards this end, we’ve decided to focus on decor companies. Here are five incredibly creative black-owned design companies that you should try right now.

The Black Home

Founded by celebrity designer Neffi Walker, The Black Home brand offers stunning home decor goods from candles and textiles to tableware and wallpaper. The mother of five is known for her use of dark tones with pops of color and gold detailing. It's her delicate (and beautiful) balance of bold minimalism that's garnered the love of top design magazines and stars like Mandy Moore. Walker even offers e-books on how to achieve her design style room by room.

Duett Interiors

Described as the Batman of design, Tiffany Thompson offers both her interior design services and a product line. Her style is a mix of brutalism, newly defined minimalism and wabi-sabi that is reflected in her chic plastic-covered pillows. They are also a nod to Thompson's grandmother's living room with eclectic patterns that make the pieces showstoppers. Not surprisingly, they sell out quickly.

Domain

Created by boutique interior design firm Laura Hodges Studio, Domain is a curated collection of everything from dish towels and throw pillows to ceramics, vases and artwork. You could outfit your entire home down to your note cards with the famous interior designer's vision. And you'll be happy to know that all the pieces are sustainable and local or globally sourced fair trade. Architectural Digest has named Domain one of Top 40 home decor shops in America.

Reflektion Design

After a 2006 trip to Ghana, Anitra Terrell fell in love with African design and textiles and has since created a store filled with these vibrant pieces. You can purchase handwoven baskets, tableware and more featuring a Mud cloth and Ankara fabric as the foundation. Her reasoning for choosing those textiles is that they are vibrant and hold a lot of historical and cultural significance dating back to the 17th century. Bonus: they're all ethically sourced from around the world and handmade in the U.S.

Lichen

Ed Be and Jared Blake are the brains behind the everchanging interior design incubator Lichen based in Brooklyn. They came together in 2017 to create a community inspired by creativity, design and music. Now they have a home decor shop that features unique, sleek products from trays and stools to tables and chairs. A piece from Lichen will make a statement in any space.
