Danielle Herrington on Modeling Industry Changes for the Black Community

The SI Swimsuit cover model highlights Black-owned businesses she supports, and you should too.

Danielle Herrington is no stranger to life on set. The Compton, Calif. native graced the SI Swimsuit cover in 2018, just a year after making her debut in the magazine. Since then, she's appeared in campaigns for Perry Ellis, Savage x Fenty, and more. And, as a Black model, she has noticed the one thing that needs to change in the modeling industry to promote inclusivity and support the community.

"To start, the modeling industry should hire Black hairstylists to do Black hair," says Herrington. "Hair is still a big issue, and most of the time I have to teach the hairstylist how to do my hair and what products to use on set. If you're going to hire a Black model for your brand, then you should have a hairstylist who is actually experienced in doing Black hair."

What's more, adds Herrington, is that the industry could support Black female-run businesses by purchasing products for shoots. "I love PATTERN hair products," she says. "Not only is it made for curly textured hair, but there are also different products that are made for specific types of curly hair. It smells good and makes my hair so soft."

Herrington also hopes to promote businesses that fuel one of her other passions as well: fitness. "Lapp the Brand has the coolest sportswear," she said. "Nature's Thirst Trap is a juice company. The owner is from Compton and is making healthier options available and more easily accessible."

Though the 27-year-old is highly sought-after now, she only started modeling six years ago. It was a dream of hers since she was just eight years old. Now, she hopes to inspire others to pursue their dreams as well. She loves sharing her journey on Instagram and supports Black philanthropic efforts like the Concreet Community Development Foundation. "It's [an organization] that provides opportunities in arts, sports and entrepreneurship," she says.

When Herrington landed the SI Swimsuit cover, she posted, "I dedicate this to all the young girls out there. Work hard, surround yourself with good people who believe in you, and your DREAMS WILL COME TRUE!" She’s certainly proof of that.
