To conclude the series this week, the 29-year-old Cheshire, England native is cueing us in on a few food and drink items that may disrupt the balance of hormones in the body. “While individual responses to foods can vary, some women may want to be mindful of certain items that could potentially disrupt hormonal balance,” Lane explains.

Five foods that may disrupt hormone balance

Processed foods and sugars

“Highly processed foods and those high in added sugars may contribute to insulin resistance, potentially leading to hormonal imbalances,” the 2023 Swim Search co-winner explains. “Limiting the intake of sugary snacks, desserts and processed foods is advisable.”

Soy products

“While some studies suggest that moderate soy consumption is safe and may even have health benefits, excessive intake of soy-based products with high levels of phytoestrogens may interfere with hormonal balance,” Lane shares. “It’s recommended to consume soy in moderation.”

Caffeine

“High caffeine intake may affect cortisol levels and disrupt the balance of hormones,” Lane says. “While moderate caffeine consumption is generally considered safe, it’s advisable to monitor individual tolerance and consider reducing intake if needed. Like everything, take it with moderation.”

Alcohol

“Excessive alcohol consumption can impact hormonal balance, particularly affecting estrogen levels,” she adds. “Women should be mindful of their alcohol intake and aim for moderation.”

Conventional meat and poultry

“Non-organic and conventionally raised meat and poultry may contain added hormones, which could potentially influence hormonal levels,” Lane notes. “Choosing organic, hormone-free options may be a preferable choice.”
