Brooks Nader is the queen of trying the latest and greatest beauty and wellness trends and techniques. She brought us along for the final SI Swimsuit “No Filter” treatment on her roster: cryotherapy.

As part of the series, the five-time SI Swimsuit model and 2023 magazine cover star has tried JUVÉDERM, lymphatic drainage and microneedling at various beauty centers in Manhattan. This time, Nader visited the Clean Market facility for a Whole-Body Cryotherapy session.

“We’re gonna drain. We’re gonna sculpt. We’re gonna lift,” Nader states in the latest video installment. “Should we start a band? I’m gonna let you know what’s worth it [and] what’s not. I’m going to be trying all of them out.”

What is cryotherapy?

Whole-body cryotherapy is when you expose your body to very cold temperatures (usually up to –200° Fahrenheit) for a short burst of time, usually for two to four minutes. Most cryotherapy tanks are about shoulder height and you must keep your ears, hands and feet covered for the duration of the treatment.

The practice is backed by the theory that waves of coldness reduce inflammation and relieve pain, similar to the way ice can help excessive swelling. In addition to muscle and joint help, cryotherapy can also boost your moods, increase energy levels and stimulate collagen production.

Lily Kunin Doran, cofounder of Clean Market, says cryotherapy is probably best known to help with muscle recovery and joint pain and she likes to call it “nature’s Advil.”

Because cryotherapy isn’t FDA approved, it’s important to take precautions. Treatments are available at gyms, spas and wellness centers, so be sure to check out the facility beforehand.

Nader tries cryotherapy

“Is this a meat locker? Am I just a piece of meat to you people?” Nader jokes before entering the temperature-controlled chamber. “I’m scared. I love you mom and dad, and all my sisters. Here we go.”

She opened the door, quickly stepped into the chamber and had a dance party the entire time—for fun, but also to make herself a little warmer.

The results

The results of cryotherapy are almost immediate and continue over the following days as new cells grow and dead fat cells are processed by the body. In order to get the best results, medical professionals recommend multiple treatments, usually 7 to 10 for maximum results, followed by occasional maintenance treatments depending on your daily amount of exercise.

In addition to internal benefits, several cryotherapy users report noticing that their skin looks healthier and feels more supple to the touch, as a result of the collagen production. Cellulite can also be less noticeable following several treatments.

“I can’t believe how cold that is,” Nader says immediately upon exiting the room.

She takes a little break to breathe and wiggles her toes and fingers.

“O.K., I’ve finally come back to life. My fingers are now moving again. That was really hard. It was really cold,” Nader admits. “It was so worth it. My mood is improved—I’m no longer a little sassy. Also, I feel like I could literally run 100 miles right now.”

Finally, she adds that the treatment is Brooks Nader-approved and “worth all the pain.”
