Q&A with VIOLET LOVE FOUNDER REBECCA MICHAELS

SwimDaily: Tell me about your company? When did it start? Any interesting start up stories?

Rebecca Michaels: In January of 2006, while living in Maryland, I created the very first Violet Love headband out of necessity for a fashionable and functional accessory that I could take from workout to night out.  That fall the Violet Love headband won the LAUNCHED competition (chosen as one of the top 10 hottest new products of the year) at SURF EXPO and was awarded a free booth for the upcoming January 2007 tradeshow.  It became apparent to me that other people were recognizing how fantastic the headbands were and I made a decision that if I was going to do this, (launch my own brand of designer headbands), I should just go for it and give it my all.  I resigned from my career as a civil engineer, relocated my company and myself to Los Angeles in 2009 and never looked back.  From the early days of making headbands, I have expanded my business to include my self-titled label of apparel – REBECCA MICHAELS and now design high-quality performance and sportswear collections for the active, eco-conscious woman who values what she puts on her body everyday. All Violet Love and Rebecca Michaels products are proudly made in the USA and are PETA Vegan Approved.  Violet Love headbands have received accolades from The Today Show and Health Magazine for their “no-headache, no-slip” appeal and Rebecca herself was named as “One to Watch” by WWD Magazine in 2012.

SwimDaily: What philosophies are important to the success of your company?

Rebecca Michaels: To create confidence and integrity through fashionable, high-performance products that look good, feel good and fulfill a purpose — that is, providing customers with artistically and sustainably designed headbands and apparel that allow them to express themselves freely while doing what they love to do. Maintain a personal connection to my customers and business and allow my fans into my life as a friend.  Never take for granted the support of the people for my Brands and what I do and provide for them.

SwimDaily: Where did the name of your company come from?

Rebecca Michaels: Purple – aka Violet – has been my favorite color since the day I can remember… Violet eyeglasses in 4th grade, Violet pens, notebooks, backpacks in high school, Violet wigs in photos for college projects, even a Violet car at one point!  It only seemed fitting that if I were to create a brand, the branding would be all about Violet – tags, labels, and the brand itself.  So Violet Love was created and is the namesake of my growing headband company.  REBECCA MICHAELS – yes my real name (I am asked that all the time) – and only seemed natural to self-title my apparel collections.  The Rebecca Michaels brand embodies everything I wear, love, and stand for in my own life and so having my name on every garment is very appropriate for me.

SwimDaily: Have you spotted any celebrities wearing you products?

Rebecca Michaels: In my opinion we are all celebrities in this life.  There are celebrities that wear my products sure, but I have made a point in my career to never be defined by that.  I’ll end that answer there :)

SwimDaily: What new products are you most excited for?

Rebecca Michaels: I am so excited for my Spring 2014 collections to arrive!  The prints in the performance line are so vibrant and unique and staring at the samples in my office is like torture everyday.  I am obsessed with my compression shorts and sports bras, and I love to wear them not only for my workouts, but also paired with a cute pair of wedges and out for a fun afternoon with friends.

SwimDaily: Where would you like to see your company in 10 years?

Rebecca Michaels: I can envision Violet Love and Rebecca Michaels being licensed and being a part of a bigger design house - one that promotes individuality among designers, while creating an environment of support, through vision and related products.   I want Violet Love Brands to not only continue to be the premier fashion and performance headband in the market, but also for the Rebecca Michaels collections to include the performance and sportswear collections, a couture fashion line, shoes, and swimwear.
