Q&A with Theodora and Callum's co-founders Desiree Gruber and Stefani Greenfield

SwimDaily: Tell me about your company? When did it start? Any interesting start up stories?

DG: Stefani and I have known each other for over 15 years! We started as friends and then went into business together on a few projects. We launched Theodora & Callum in 2011, and from there it’s history. In many ways we’re total opposites, which really helps our business relationship – between the two of us, we cover a lot of the skills necessary to start and grow a brand.

SG: Theodora & Callum is a creative outlet. Both Desiree and I love to travel. We travel with our families, for work, with our husbands…. During all this time spent on the road we’re both inspired by the places we go and the people we see. Desiree and I wanted to channel all of this global inspiration into accessories that women can really wear and fall in love with. So we decided to launch a scarf brand. We want women to connect with our scarves and turn to them season after season for a bright pop of color, a touch of a trend, or to take our classic pieces from ordinary to extraordinary. There are so many incredible ways to express a feeling or experience through prints and vibrant colors!

SwimDaily: What philosophies are important to the success of your company?

DG: I think it’s important to stay true to who the Theodora & Callum woman is. Our brand is not just about a product: it’s an entire lifestyle. The Theodora & Callum woman is adventurous, glamorous, family-oriented, loves to travel, and is inspired by unique things and extraordinary places.

SwimDaily: Where did the name of your company come from?

DG: Theodora is Stefani’s daughter and Callum is my son. We wanted the brand to have that same feeling of adventure and discovery that our children enjoy every day.

SwimDaily: Have you spotted any celebrities wearing your products?

DG: We're been so lucky to have so many high profile T&C ambassadors, including Heidi Klum, Kerry Washington, Reese Witherspoon, Molly Sims, Jessica Alba, Oprah Winfrey, and even Mick Jagger!  It’s a very exciting time for Theodora & Callum!

SwimDaily: What new products are you most excited for?

SG: Since we launched, our incredible team has enjoyed watching the brand grow organically. We recently designed a kids’ collection that is so close to my heart. I love seeing Theodora and her friends in our signature prints and bright colors. We’ve expanded our collection of cover-ups, which now includes pants – throw them on with a sleek suit at the beach for the ultimate in Mediterranean chic. We’ll see what the future holds. The best is yet to come!

SwimDaily: Where would you like to see your company in 10 years?

DG: We are very interested in technology and the way it has changed the way we all shop. We want to stay at the forefront of innovative e-commerce and, more importantly, continue to evolve as a content brand where women can go to look for style inspiration. We know that one signature piece, like a T&C scarf, can not only complete a look, but also take it to the next level. And nothing makes me happier than when I'm walking down the street in NYC and I see someone in something from the collection – my heart literally stops! I'm looking forward to many more of those moments.

SwimDaily: How has Sports Illustrated Swimsuit impacted your brand?

DG: The Swimsuit issue has been a must-read since I was 16 years old. I remember pouring over it with my girlfriends and mapping out which suits we loved! I was born and raised in Miami so we had an especially long beach season. Now, as a brand owner, I know that anyone who designs for swim or beachwear looks to the SI issue for inspiration. We definitely do that for Theodora & Callum – it's a gold-standard for us when we're working on new collections.

SwimDaily: What has it been like working with Sports Illustrated Swimsuit? What does your company do to prepare for the Swimsuit year to come?

DG: It's an honor to have been featured in the 2013 issue! Working with the Swimsuit team is a dream because we have a shared love and appreciation for international travel and beauty found all over the world. The exotic destinations that are featured are the same ones that inspire our prints. This year, we went to Morocco with the design team and it has truly infused the collection. Outside of T&C, we've worked with Heidi Klum for many years and it's amazing to look back and see the impact that SI Swimsuit has had on her brand and career.

SwimDaily: What does the 50th anniversary of the Swimsuit Issue mean to you?
