Hyunjoo Hwang was featured in the 2020 SI Swimsuit Issue after traveling to Bali with photographer Yu Tsai. The 31-year-old South Korean model and ballet dancer was a finalist in the prior year’s Swim Search open casting call before being selected to return as a rookie in ’20.

While she noted that getting the opportunity to pose in front of Yu Tsai’s lens for the iconic publication was not only a “big change” as a model, she said it was also a huge stepping stone for herself as a woman.

“I have such a big passion as a performer, so I always wanted to be on stage or on screen, so I think that’s why I became a model,” Hwang added.

She noted that when she was a little girl, she “wanted to be loved by everyone,” which she quickly learned was not possible. “And now I realize that success in life is just being around the people who I love,” Hwang noted while on location. “I know myself and what I want to do. I feel very liberated and free.”

In addition to her feature in the SI Swimsuit Issue three years ago, Hwang has also modeled for major brands like Victoria’s Secret, Laura Mercier, Michael Kors and Nordstrom. This summer, she was featured in Vogue Korea and posed for a stunning and colorful spread.

Below are six of our favorite photos from her rookie photoshoot in Bali with Yu Tsai.
