When Halima Aden made her SI Swimsuit debut in 2019, she became the first hijab-wearing model to appear in the magazine. Halima got her start on the pageant circuit, where she was the first participant to sport a hijab and wear a burkini during the swimsuit competition. Halima was born in a refugee camp in Kenya and moved to the United States at the age of 7.


She is a UNICEF ambassador, diversity advocate, and has collaborated with modest clothing brand Modanisa to design her own turban and shawl collection. Though she stepped away from the industry in 2017, her goal remains the same: to improve awareness and visibility for Muslim women.
