Denmark native Josephine Skriver was a seasoned model long before she graced the pages of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit. With features in campaigns for Armani, Gucci and several other fashion powerhouses and appearances in publications such as Vogue and W Magazine, the model certainly found success early in her career. 

In 2020, she made her debut with SI Swimsuit, gracing the pages of the issue with photos from her shoot with Kate Powers in the Dominican Republic. During her rookie photoshoot, Skriver took the time to reflect on the mission of the magazine and her mission in participating in the issue.

The model was impressed by “how Sports Illustrated has evolved over the years and has been so forward thinking and so embracing,” she said on set in the Caribbean nation. It’s “everything I want the modeling industry to stand for. ... Modeling is what you do, not who you are.”

According to the 30-year-old, SI’s approach to inclusivity was a huge part of her appreciation for the issue. “I want a girl to be able to look in a magazine and see herself, and I feel like Sports Illustrated has managed to include anyone and everybody,” she remarked. “I’m just so grateful to be part of that group now.”

Taking part in the issue was Skriver’s way of saying, “I stand behind every woman in this magazine,” she explained.

“I just want everybody to love themselves exactly how they are,” she said.

Skriver was included in the issue for three consecutive years, including her debut in 2020. Below are eight of our favorite photos from her rookie shoot.
