After co-winning the first Swim Search in 2018, Haley Kalil returned to the fold for a total of four beachside features with the SI Swimsuit Issue. Her first brand photo shoot took place in Belize, where she posed for photographer Yu Tsai. The 31-year-old Minnesota native also traveled to Kenya, the British Virgin Islands and Florida with the magazine.

“Sports Illustrated Swimsuit has truly, I mean truly, changed my life,” Kalil stated at the time of her brand debut. “I went from being somebody that had no modeling experience, I had never had a modeling agency, I was turned down by every modeling agency I ever contacted [to being in the magazine] ... and so Sports Illustrated Swimsuit has truly opened up so many doors for me. It’s all about embracing beauty in every different shape, size, color, and it’s that diversity that makes Sports Illustrated Swimsuit so beautiful, and that’s what the industry is now embracing.”

Kalil explained how excited she was to be at the “forefront” of that movement of acceptance, and her collaboration with SI Swimsuit led her to book work with several additional dream clients.

The model, who also has a bachelor of science degree in medical biology and psychology, and a minor in chemistry, is a content creator who, today, regularly hits red carpet events to rub elbows with celebrities like Billie Eilish

In honor of her continued success, today we’re throwing it back to a few of our favorite photos from the SI Swimsuit feature that started it all.
