With the spa specializing in facials, exfoliations and sugaring, we were thrilled to have the chance sit down with the owner of Daphne, Angela Rosen, to get the inside scoop on all things skincare. From proper sunscreen application to her professional opinion on gua sha tools and injectables, learn what tips and tricks Rosen recommends to achieve your healthiest skin yet.

We all know we should be wearing sunscreen year-round, but what is the proper application and how often should we reapply?

Apply 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure: “To ensure adequate protection, apply natural sunscreen at least 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. This allows time for the product to fully absorb into the skin and form a protective barrier.”

Reapply regularly: “Even natural sunscreens can wear off or become less effective over time, especially after sweating, swimming or towel-drying. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or more frequently if engaged in activities that cause heavy perspiration or water exposure.”

Combine with other sun protection measures: “Natural sunscreen is just one part of a comprehensive sun protection routine. Remember to seek shade when the sun is strongest, wear protective clothing (such as wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses), and limit sun exposure during peak hours (usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.).

Always read and follow the instructions provided by the specific natural sunscreen product for best results and tailored guidance.”

Do you have a go-to sunscreen?

TIZO®

is dedicated to creating 100% mineral photoprotection that is highly efficacious, exceptionally elegant and versatile for use on virtually all skin types and tones.”

What are the biggest skincare mistakes you see clients make in the summer?

“Everyone should be wearing hats and sunscreen!”

What are your holy grail Biologique Recherche products?

“The

P50 1970

and

VIP O2 Masque

from Biologique Recherche are my two favorite products, though I love the entire line!”

What made you work exclusively with that skincare line?

“This is our main line that we carry. We love it because they give us so many tools to truly change people’s skin. We also carry a beautiful line from Germany called MBR, which is very clean and was formulated originally for pre- and post-op and is great especially for anti-aging and we carry Environ from South Africa.”

How often should we really be getting facials?

“I believe once a month facials are great. If you can take time to come in on a weekly basis, you could really change your skin by adding microcurrent or other clearing or anti-aging treatments but for facials that are exfoliated, we suggest once a month.”

How do you feel about at home sculpting tools like gua shas or microcurrent devices?

“I love love, love gua sha, and also facial yoga at home. I prefer microcurrent in the spa because the machines are way more efficient, but I do think adding gua aha to your home routine is very beneficial.”

What age would you recommend people begin getting facials?

“My mother was very good about starting to show me how to do a proper skincare routine when I was probably in third or fourth grade, with very gentle products. I have not missed washing and caring for my face every day for the past 40 years. I think it’s nice to introduce masks as well at home during grade school and then maybe around 11 or 12 have a quarterly facial, especially if you’re noticing hormonal changes in your teens.”

You see the effects of botox and filler in your practice, I’m sure. Do you think a minimalist approach to injectables is better for the skin?

“It’s definitely better to do less and for preventative measures a lot of people think that if they have Botox® they don’t have to take care of the skin, which is not true to have beautiful skin. Even if you’re using Botox®, you should have an amazing skincare routine.

I am not a huge fan of filler. I have seen so many nightmares with really bad injections and people also get addicted to fillers so it’s something to be aware of. Of course there are some exceptions where it could offer slight corrections but yes, less is best.”

Have you seen an increase in young clients getting injectables and is there anything they should be aware of or weary of that you think isn’t talked about?

“Yes, unfortunately I have seen people in their 20s and 30s getting filler thinking that it looks great but actually I haven’t seen very many instances where it looks better. Also, it can stretch out your skin so if you start doing it at an early age and you can’t afford to keep doing it, your skin can be very loose from not being able to keep up financially.”

Best diet tip for good skin?

“Cucumber juice and celery juice I think are both amazing for glowing skin. I also love avocados and unflavored coconut yogurt, and of course, a daily dose of turmeric.”
