Professional tennis player Sloane Stephens posed for the 2018 SI Swimsuit Issue when she traveled to Aruba with photographer James Macari. While the Florida native first picked up a racket as a young girl, she went pro in 2009 and won the junior French Open, Wimbledon and US Open doubles titles just a year later.

The formerly world No. 3 ranked player won her first major title at the US Open in 2017, just one year before her SI Swimsuit debut. Stephens competed in the first round of the 2023 US Open on Aug. 28, but was defeated by Brazilian tennis player Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Of her SI Swimsuit feature, Stephens shared that since she grew up by the ocean, she was comfortable in swimwear, but the looks she wore on location in the Caribbean were a bit tinier than she was used to.

“The most challenging shots were shots posing with the waves splashing on you,” she added of her modeling feature. “Trying to maintain your composure with waves and sand flowing was wild. I have so much respect for all of the models of the world. Modeling is fun but extremely challenging work.”

She added that she didn’t have any particular expectations ahead of the photoshoot and went into the experience with an open mind.

“I was nervous and excited beforehand, but once I saw the vision for the issue, I became more relaxed,” Stephens noted at the time. “It was definitely better than I expected!”
