For a variety of reasons, 2019 was a momentous year for former professional alpine skier Lindsey Vonn. In January, she won a bronze medal in the women’s downhill race at the 2019 World Championships. Directly after, she officially announced her retirement, bringing an end to her historic and hugely impressive career.

In May, she made another big announcement: her third feature in the annual SI Swimsuit Issue. That year’s magazine feature brought her to the beaches of Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, where she posed for the publication. Standing before the lens of photographer Walter Chin, she proved yet again that her skill extended far beyond the slopes.

“3rd time is the charm! I embraced myself and had a blast doing it!” she said of the experience in an Instagram post. “Thank you @si_swimsuit for including me and thank you @mj_day for breaking boundaries with the women you’ve showcased in the magazine 💪🏻 #beforesurgery.”

It was an announcement that shortly followed another knee surgery for the pro athlete, who had attributed her retirement, in part, to consistent injuries and subsequent surgeries.

Vonn had first taken to the set of the SI Swimsuit Issue nearly a decade before in 2010, when she was still at the height of her career. Though, career-wise, her life looked a lot different in 2019, she made the most of the feature all the same. Below are some of the most stunning photos from her trip to Mexico.
