Paulina Porizkova is living proof that age is just a number. And she's getting ready to use her platform with SI Swimsuit to prove it.
The Czech-born supermodel was first shot by Walter Iooss Jr. for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit in 1983, when she was just 23-years-old. She appeared in the magazine from 1983-1986, again in 1989, 1992, 2004 and for our SI Swimsuit 50th Anniversary Legends shoot in 2014. She was the first woman from Central Europe to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit in 1984. Paulina was also invited back last year as a part of our female-empowerment, body-paint special which also included names like Aly Raisman, Hunter McGrady and Olivia Culpo.
"In a way, it’s more than being naked," Paulina said about her emotional IN HER OWN WORDS shoot last year. "It’s not just that you’re nude, but it’s also 'you’re nude and you show me the way you want me to see you.'
"It’s even more naked than naked. I wanted to say that I’m not ashamed of my body and you shouldn’t be ashamed of your body, no matter what age you are. We all have our own truths. We all want to live according to our own truths. We want to be true to ourselves so truth is what matters more than anything."
Paulina also penned an essay for us last year, in which she reflects on ageism and her "nightmares about being once again photographed for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue." At that time, she believed that despite personal knowledge of her inner strengths, "as far as modeling goes [her] expiration date [had] passed."
"In my opinion, nothing ages as poorly as a beautiful woman’s confidence," she said.
Back, over 30 years later, to prove everyone — including herself — wrong, Paulina is ready to dazzle on the beaches Hemingways Watamu in Kenya. She will shoot her 10th SI Swimsuit spread with photographer Yu Tsai, and we can't wait to see the results!
