SI Swimsuits Beauty Boost series offers expert advice on makeup, hairstyling, fashion and all things beauty from leading professionals in the industry. This month, the series features tips from Black hair and makeup stylists who have worked on SI Swimsuit photo shoots.

Anyone with curly hair knows the feeling that their hair can feel like it has a mind of its own. Curly hair can be hard to predict, especially when trying to style it naturally. Some days it’s perfect, other days, not so much. Not to mention the unpredictability of managing curls on vacation in humid weather, or in especially dry climates. We tapped celebrity hairstylist Kim Kimble for her expert tips on achieving frizz-free curls wherever you go.

As a third-generation hairstylist and the founder of Kimble Beauty and K2 Beauty, Kimble is an expert in hair care and styling, especially for women of color with various hair textures. She advocates for embracing natural hair textures and has made her mark in the entertainment industry with her hairstyling expertise and innovation.

Kimble started as a shampoo girl in her family salon in Los Angeles and has since trained at Vidal Sassoon Academy and Dudley Cosmetology University. She has worked with many celebrities, including Halle Berry, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Zendaya. Her work has been featured in magazines and international ad campaigns, making her a household name in the hair and beauty world.

For the 2019 SI Swimsuit Issue cover shoot in Exuma, Kimble crafted the perfect beach waves for Tyra Banks. “It was a beautiful, effortless beachy sexy hair,” says Kimble. “I curled it with a wand to create texture and finger combed it. I used a little bit of product, like a serum, to polish the hair so that we could separate it and have it look beachy.”

Kim Kimble’s Tips for Frizz-Free Curls

  1. Sleep on a silk pillowcase or bonnet to reduce friction and maintain curls overnight. Sleeping on cotton dries out your hair and can cause the hair to become lackluster. Try the Kim Kimble Slumber Cap Night Bonnet ($35).
  2. Use a shampoo that is sulfate free (a mild shampoo).
  3. Make sure to use conditioners that reduce the frizz in your hair.
  4. Read the ingredients on all of your curl products. Make sure there is no alcohol because that will cause dryness. Try the Kim Kimble Curling Pudding Crème ($13.99).
  5. Use castor oil to defrizz hair and add body, especially on dry, frizzy hair. Hot oil treatments can also work on straight hair to make it feel more hydrated and conditioned.
  6. Humidity can actually be your friend. Contrary to popular thought, humidity is good for curls, especially if you use a good iron. The Kim Kimble Curling Iron ($49.97) defies frizz and fly-aways.
  7. In dry weather, make sure to keep your curls extra hydrated. Use more hot oil treatments to help keep luscious beautiful curls.

By following these tips, you can achieve frizz-free curls in any weather. Remember, every head of hair is unique, so experiment with different products and techniques to find what works best for you.
