Among the Swim Search finalists in 2021 was model Natalie Gage, the English native who moved to New York to pursue her modeling career. Gage took to the beaches of Atlantic City with photographer Yu Tsai for her first feature in the SI Swimsuit Issue.

The model had already been living in New York and working as a model for two years before she got the call up from SI Swimsuit editor in chief MJ Day congratulating her on her upcoming feature in the issue.

Along with her spread in the magazine, Gage had the opportunity to reflect on the status and meaning of beauty in today’s world. We live “now in a world where we have beauty standards, of course, but we have other standards of how we should live our lives, and ... how we should do things,” she said in 2021.

She uses herself as an example of not following the status quo. “Live your own life, define yourself, live by your own rules. I define who I am,” she remarked. “When you live authentically, you can’t go wrong.”

Achieving a feature in the magazine had been “a dream of [Gage’s] for so, so long,” and just another opportunity for her to define herself and live by her own rules. “Why not be proactive?” she said of the decision to apply to Swim Search. “Go for your dreams.”

Gage certainly went for her dreams—and achieved them, too. Below are some of our favorite photos from her 2021 feature.
