The Brazilian surfer stepped into the great outdoors for her SI Swimsuit feature.

When Brazilian surfer Bruna Schmitz traveled to Banff, Canada for her SI Swimsuit feature in 2011, the athlete swapped her surf board for a fishing pole in a series of pics that embraced the great outdoors.

“This is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen,” Schmitz said of her surroundings while posing in front of Stephan Wurth’s lens. “When I first got here and I saw all the lakes with the mountains and like snow on the top of the mountain, I was like, ‘This isn’t real, like this place doesn’t exist,’ but it does, it’s beautiful.”

Schmitz, who went pro at the young age of 15, competed in the World Surf League’s championship tour in 2010 and again the following year. Today, the 33-year-old is also a wife and proud mom. She and her husband, Dane Zaun, are currently expecting their second child together.

While she no longer competes these days, Schmitz still surfs and often shares snippets of her sweet family life or snaps from the beach with her 104,000 Instagram followers. And while her SI Swimsuit photoshoot took place a dozen years ago, we still can’t get enough of Schmitz’s feature, which challenged the model and athlete, in a good way.

“The [theme] for the shoot is fly fishing, and I don’t know anything about that,” Schmitz admitted. “Boots, the vest, the blanket… I was actually trying to fish, and I was having a lot of trouble.”

We would’ve never known, judging from the resulting images. Below are just a few of our favorites from the Canadian wilderness.
