Q&A with BHATI BEADS FOUNDER MARGARET MAGGARD

SwimDaily: Tell me about your company? When did it start? Any interesting start up stories?

Margaret Maggard: Bhati Beads was founded in 2002 when I was working as a yoga teacher.  So many students had asked about purchasing my homemade jewelry that I decided I’d better switch my focus to designing jewelry.

SwimDaily: What philosophies are important to the success of your company?

Margaret Maggard: Bhati Beads has always been about hand-made, artisan-based jewelry that has not come off a factory line.

SwimDaily: Where did the name of your company come from?

Margaret Maggard: A Sanskrit word for a yogic breathwork practice, kapalabhati, or “skull shining.”  I liked the “to make shine or glow” meaning of bhati.

SwimDaily: Have you spotted any celebrities wearing you products?

Margaret Maggard: Cameron Diaz, Selena Gomez, Brooklyn Decker, Stacy Keibler, and Michelle Obama.

SwimDaily: How has Sports Illustrated Swimsuit impacted your brand?

Margaret Maggard: Bhati Beads jewelry has appeared in seven consecutive issues of SI Swimsuit. Starting with the 2007 issue, being included in the magazine and on si.com changed the company overnight and  has brought the world to our (virtual) doorstep.

SwimDaily: What has is been like working with Sports Illustrated Swimsuit? What does your company do to prepare for the Swimsuit year to come?

Margaret Maggard: We’ve loved working with all the Swimsuit staff over the years.  It’s a joy and a privilege to be part of this iconic issue and of the Swimsuit family.  I have have gone to bead shows all over the country looking for ideas and inspiration for new Swimsuit jewelry.

SwimDaily: Where do you see swim trends in 10 years?

Margaret Maggard: Swimwear for adventure sport girls that is functional but still sexy.

SwimDaily: What does the 50th anniversary of the Swimsuit Issue mean to you?

Margaret Maggard:
