When Olympic athlete Lindsey Vonn traveled to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, for her 2019 SI Swimsuit Issue photoshoot, it was her third feature with the brand. She made her debut with the magazine nine years prior, when she posed in the snow in Whistler, Canada. Vonn returned to the fold for the second time in Petit St. Vincent, where she took part in a unique bodypaint feature in 2016.

The 38-year-old former professional skier, who retired from her sport the same year she posed for the magazine in Mexico, told SI Swimsuit earlier this year that she was “pretty nervous” for her first photoshoot with the brand back in 2010.

“I wasn’t entirely confident with how I looked at the time,” Vonn admitted. “I think being featured in the magazine made me look at myself in a different, more positive light.”

While we never would’ve guessed that the three-time Olympic medalist was anything but self-assured, due to the poised nature she seems to naturally project, Vonn also shared that her confidence grew each time she stepped in front of the lens.

“In some ways, it boosted my confidence and made me feel that having a strong and athletic body was not just O.K. but something to be proud of and celebrated,” she stated. “Each issue I was in, I was more and more confident, and it’s amazing to see that transformation in the pictures and in myself.”
