Danish model Nina Agdal first posed for the SI Swimsuit Issue in 2012, when she traveled to Desroches Island, Seychelles with photographer James Macari. She earned Rookie of the Year honors, and returned to the fold again in ’13.

In 2014, Agdal landed the cover of the 50th anniversary SI Swimsuit Issue, alongside fellow brand stars Chrissy Teigen and Lily Aldridge after their photoshoot in the Cook Islands. Throughout her tenure with the magazine, Agdal appeared in a total of six consecutive issues, most recently in Mexico in ’17.

Besides her work with the SI Swimsuit Issue, the 31-year-old has graced the covers of The Daily and Hamptons Magazine, and starred in campaigns for notable brands like Marc Jacobs and DKNY. She’s also a fitness buff and offers workout and wellness content on her app, The Agdal Method.

“Sports Illustrated Swimsuit and MJ Day [editor in chief] were the ones to put my name on the map and that helped me pursue my modeling career in a way that wouldn’t have been possible without them,” Agdal stated last year. “Some of my best memories are from the early, early mornings and shoot days with the SI crew.”

In honor of her accomplished career, we’re throwing it back to Agdal’s 2016 photoshoot in Zanzibar. While many of her beachside spreads featured bright and beautiful bikinis, this one adopted a darker color palette, and embraced anything but basic black. Below are a few of our favorite looks, captured by photographer Ruven Afanador.
