Bruna Schmitz was photographed by Stephan Wurth in Banff, Canada

Bruna Schmitz was already more than a decade into her surfing career when she took to the lakes of Banff, Canada, for her SI Swimsuit feature. The Brazil native started surfing when she was just 9, taking her talents on trips around the world and practicing her craft in various tropical locations.

When she was 14, she had already won over 30 surfing titles, making her a shoe-in for Roxy’s team of professional surfers. It only went up from there. In 2010 and 2011, she qualified for the World Surf League’s Championship Tour, cementing herself as a big force in the pro surfing world.

With her second WSL championship appearance came likewise her feature within the pages of the SI Swimsuit Issue. While perhaps being in front of a lens was new to her, being in a swimsuit and in the spotlight was not. She took it all in stride.

The resulting photos, captured by photographer Stephan Wurth, were incredible, showcasing her beauty and her bubbly personality, too. In the snaps, the athlete posed in a series of black-and-white bikinis on the banks of the lakes of Banff, an idyllic backdrop for her stunning photos.

The 33-year-old now spends much of her time with her husband and her two kids, the youngest of whom was born just weeks ago. But she can still kick it on the waves, too—and has proven as much in social media posts.

It may be over 10 years since her SI Swimsuit feature, but we’re still not over the incredible photo shoot. Here are some of our favorites from the day.
