Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio made history with the 2020 SI Swimsuit Issue. After her photoshoot on Scrub Island, British Virgin Islands, she became the first transgender model to be featured within the pages of the magazine. Her work was so impressive that she was invited back the following year, when she traveled to Hollywood, Fla., for a beachside feature with Ben Watts.

In addition to her two SI Swimsuit Issue spreads, the 26-year-old beauty has also worked with notable brands like Victoria’s Secret and L’Oreal Paris, and has been featured in publications such as Vogue Thailand and Mujer Hoy.

During an interview with SI Swimsuit a few years ago, Sampaio shared her inspirational thoughts on beauty, which are still just as applicable today. The model-actress believes that true beauty comes from within, and it’s important to show yourself love.

“You have to look in the mirror and you have to love yourself... You have to look for the things that you love,” she stated. “I love my eyes, I love my hands. You have to look to the good things.”

While she’s self-assured in nature, she encouraged others to take the time to get to know themselves in order to live life to the fullest.

“The most important thing, no matter who you are, is to know yourself, to understand yourself and trust it enough to live it,” she advised.
