Lauren Chan is no stranger to the fashion industry. The Canada native has worked as a fashion writer for outlets like Vogue and Interview, and previously held the position as fashion features editor at Glamour, where she focused on a plus-size beat. She’s also the founder of Henning, a size-inclusive luxury womenswear brand that was acquired by Universal Standard earlier this year.

Chan, a rookie in the 2023 SI Swimsuit Issue, posed for photographer James Macari in the Dominican Republic. We recently caught up with the model during launch week events at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino - Hollywood, Fla., to chat all about her rookie year.

While Chan says that the experience marked a new chapter in her life, she also notes that one piece of swimwear in particular from her time on location was a total standout.

“My favorite swimsuit from the day was the Bromelia tortoiseshell bikini that we shot in the cenote and is in the book on page 37,” Chan playfully shares while calling out her magazine feature.

The classic string bikini is fully adjustable for a custom fit and comes in a variety of other colors and prints, all of which are perfect for hitting the pool or beach this summer.

Prior to the release of the annual issue, Chan, who identifies as gay, penned a thoughtful essay on her coming out process and her journey to the SI Swimsuit Issue. Read it here.

“It was a real time embodiment of a page turn. It was like, whoa, that’s her. That’s the new me. That’s who I’m stepping into. That’s who I’m so proud to be,” Chan says of her emotional photo shoot. “And I think that I’m so moved by all of my involvement in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit as well because of the team and community and friends and family and cheerleaders that have supported me throughout this.”
