How SI Swim Models Practice Self-Love Every Day
July 24 is International Self-Care Day, and SI Swimsuit is here to tell you to listen to your body while treating yourself. Whether it’s a 20-minute walk without screens or sounds, or a 90-minute facial from a licensed aesthetician, go ahead and take a well-deserved break.
The International Self-Care Foundation created the annual day in 2011 to raise awareness about—and emphasize the importance of—self-care. The organization has built its platform around the idea that self-care isn’t limited to singular acts of love, kindness or luxury, but instead can be anything from a healthy meal plan or a workout regimen to promoting a clean space or developing good habits. Self-care can mean listening to your body and addressing its needs, whether mentally, physically or spiritually.
For a bit of inspiration, below are some of the ways in which SI Swimsuit models practice self-care today and every day.
Georgina Burke is in her self-tan era (with clean ingredients)
The Burke NYC founder created her size-friendly swimwear line a few years ago and then expanded the brand to include clean self-tanning products. The two-time SI Swimsuit model practices self-care by protecting herself from harsh ultraviolet rays and making her skin bronzed and glowy with a bit of faux tan.
“It’s free of a lot of nasties that you find in [other tanning products]. As someone with such sensitive skin, I went through a lot of product testing on myself to find a formula that worked with my skin. The color also had to be just right,” the Australian model told SI Swimsuit. “A few times, I ended up looking like a giant Oompa Loompa as the product made me too orange. [We went] through trial and error until we landed on a product that didn’t give me any reactions and came out with just the right color to suit many skin types.”
Nicole Williams English leans into hydration and nutritional supplements postpartum
New mom Nicole Williams English has totally redefined her self-care practices since welcoming her baby girl India Moon in January. The 2023 SI Swimsuit rookie did her best to stay super hydrated while pregnant and now, postpartum, loves a good lymphatic drainage massage.
The Nia Lynn founder is also prioritizing her overall health these days. As a vegetarian, she noticed that she was rapidly losing weight while breastfeeding, so she added supplements to her diet to increase her protein intake. Shop some of her favorite self-care products here.
Mady Dewey believes in a digital detox
As ironic as it may seem, Silicon Valley tech entrepreneur Mady Dewey is the biggest advocate for a digital detox. The 2023 SI Swimsuit rookie, who is the cofounder of metrics-free social media app Herd, believes in intentionally unplugging from the digital world as a form of self-care and swears by her daily morning walk.
“It is really easy to wanna document everything and post about it, but I think there’s a lot to be said for taking some days where you’re just in the sun with some friends enjoying life, [being] in the moment, not worrying about anything that’s on your phone,” the Discord product marketing manager told SI Swimsuit. “So even if it’s a few hours a day, that intentionality can make such a difference.”
Jena Sims relieves stress with buccal massages
Swim Search finalist Jena Sims has discovered her newest form of self-care and she is totally obsessed. The non-profit CEO, who is expecting her first baby with professional golfer Brooks Koepka, has been documenting her experience with buccal massages on TikTok.
“I feel like I store a lot of my stress and it’s in my jaw,” she said. “[The aesthetician] literally goes in there and releases the tension and really works the face muscles out. It is the most relaxing thing I think I’ve ever done. It lifts and tones and firms your face. I swear by it.”
Katie Austin balances healthy eating and exercise with joy
The fitness influencer, who co-won the Swim Search open casting call in 2021 and has returned each year since, lives a healthy, active and balanced lifestyle and is constantly encouraging her followers to do the same.
She loves a hearty pasta salad and grilled veggies in the summer, and is always in the mood for an outdoor walk as a form of low-impact movement. Austin also knows that the most important act of self-care is simply listening to your body’s cues and doing what’s best for you, even if it means taking a little break from your routine.
Emily DiDonato knows skincare is self-care
Covey cofounder and six-time SI Swimsuit model Emily DiDonato is the biggest believer in the fact that skincare is self-care. The mom of two has nailed her routine and prioritizes clean ingredients, sun protection and “skin minimalism.” Learn more about and shop her four-step routine here.
